For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Bacurau (2019), a Brazilian satirical acid western about a town out in the desert in northeast Brazil; it lives in matriarchal harmony, until suddenly, the head matriarch dies, and everything goes out of whack. Weather patterns start screwing up, animals start going crazy, and the town has disappeared from all of the maps. What’s going on? Time to solve a mystery, in surreal fashion, often accompanied by drug use. This is the most popular film to date from director Kleber Mendonca Filho, who is otherwise known for the landlord class-drama Aquarius (2016); we haven’t watched that one yet.

After that is Scream (2022), the fifth installment in the ever-popular meta-horror series. In this installment, guess what? Ghostface is back, and he’s killing a new generation of movie-obsessed youths, using the series’ legacy as a blueprint for his massacre. You’d better believe Sidney, Gale, and Dewey are all back to kick some butt, though. Wes Craven died in 2015, so the duo of Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin have taken his place in the director’s chair; they are otherwise best-known for Ready or Not (2019), which we have not yet watched.
