For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Nickel Boys (2024), a drama about an African-American boy who is sent to a Florida reform school after being falsely accused of a crime. He meets a friend there and they learn to navigate through the inhumane youth-reform system and its leaders, who are, by turns, corrupt, incompetent, and sadistic. God Damn Amerikkka: The Movie. It is the feature-film debut of director RaMell Ross, and one of this year’s nominees for the Best Picture Oscar.

After that is Aaahh Belinda (1986), a Turkish fantasy-comedy about a woman who wins a part as a traditional housewife in a shampoo commercial, only for her to wake up and find that she has actually become the character, and must adjust to her new, nightmarish, domestic life. Satire snd comedy about gender relations in Turkey follows from there. This is the best-reviews film, and one of the best-known, of exceptionally prolific director Atif Yilmaz, who made over 100 features across several decades, and one of the highest-rated Turkish films on Letterboxd. Looks neat, so let’s watch.
