For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Masculin Feminin (1966), a French postmodernist rom-com from renowned auteur Jean-Luc Godard, consisting of fifteen vignettes, all following a group of hip young Parisians as they engage with various topics, such as consumerism, American cultural hegemony, film-bro brainrot, and Marxism. “Marx and Coca-Cola” is, in fact, the phrase that Godard used to describe his aesthetic here, and it is often considered a thematic prelude to his Maoist tract La Chinoise (1967), which we previously watched. One of his better-known films, and one of the more iconic French New Wave movies in general. Let’s check it out.

After that is Scream 3 (2000), Wes Craven’s sequel to the smash-hit slashers Scream (1996) and Scream 2 (1997). In this installment, Sydney’s struggle against Ghostman has been adapted into a major motion picture series, Stab, which is now on its third entry; she and her friends visit the film set, and are introduced to the seedy underbelly of the sleazy Hollywood machine. Oh, and Ghostman starts killing everyone again. The filmmakers later claimed during the #Metoo stuff that this was actually meant as a satire of Harvey Weinstein, who is credited as executive producer here. Not sure if I believe that, but we’ll see.
