I had heard stories from my parents about people foraging for mushrooms in “the old country” (the Soviet Union), villagers from their province sometimes supplemented dwindling supplies with wild forest mushrooms.

They said they were invited multiple times to go on mushroom hunts but were afraid of traversing the forests after dusk, and they were glad they refused, because one large family served mushroom soup, and the menti (police/milita) found them all dead.

Parents, grandparents, children, an entire family generation wiped out by mushroom soup, all dead in their chairs in the dining room.

TLDR: ROCM is AMD’s variant for general purpose compute on GPUs, like CUDA is for NVIDIA.

I use ROCM extensively (I write, design and train my own AIs/LLMs) and it’s annoying of an acronym, especially in command lines:

--rocm-6.6.7.2-dev1  --cuda

But I figure it’s a four letter acronym to match “CUDA”.

I also pronounce it “Rock’em” in verbal versus “Koo’dah” (Barracuda).

Everything is about marketing and goodwill. You can just say something has “blast processing” and fail to elaborate.

Yeah, the dating apps are monetized to all hell, you guys have called it right.

I was on them a decade ago, and I’m classically handsome, mentally stable, good job, etc; went looking for a serious partner with similar life goals, and all I got was catfishing and trolls.

After I subscribed to the premium tier, I began getting messages from real people but I was so disgusted by the transparent greed that I swore off all dating websites and services and went the offline route, meeting my current SO through real life friends at a social event.

Starve the beast, as the conservatives say. Deny them their money.

I was forced to calculate the black body temperature and radiation for the Earth, back in college by hand.

I decided for fun to zero out the sun from the equation to see what would happen.

My math came out to about -32°C average surface temperature.

Earth would become an ice planet.

I think you’d uh, need a bit more than a sweater in those conditions 😅
