I think it’s telling that the more one knows about software, the less that they want it in their lives.

This reminds me of QEMU internals. Virtual hardware support is paramount in an emulator, so nobody wants to break old code that was probably written by an expert who knew that piece of hardware better than you ever will.
I hope users know that Lemmy exists. Reddit suppresses discussion of alternatives and usually bans links. Word-of-mouth is slower but it will get there eventually.
