Well it’s from my experience during lockdown when I started to dualboot Linux and Windows with an NVidia GPU and some benchmarks I’ve seen on YouTube recently.
How a CPU bottleneck could happen on an OS and not on another ?
Riseup VPN is not a commercial VPN and works in a different way that most VPN, basically it allow you to root traffic through their foundation’s servers. You have no guarantee to have great speed at any time or based on your current geolocation. Remember that a VPN does not bring privacy or anonymity but yes for a free VPN it’s better than the majority of options.
When playing the exact same games on the exact same machine with NVidia GPU you can get 8-20% better performance on Windows compared to Linux. On the AMD side you can get up to 5% boost on Linux, that’s just the reality. Though you could also loose 5% performance compared to Windows in some games.
And to answer your question it should have been around 2022.
Yes it is free as in free beer, it connect to a network based on an open protocole of federated free (as in freedom) software instances. It also value users privacy and respect their digital integrity, could do more to that but it’s not even comparable to reddit lol. It’s not black or white.
I didn’t say that it has to. It’s my choice to choose an option that respect my freedom. I have no issue with Arctic and it being proprietary. I simply use it to test the client and not interact extensively with the fediverse. One of the reason I like the Fediverse it’s because it’s Free Software as in Freedom, and that’s the same reason why I like Free and Open Source Clients for the Fediverse. I use proprietary software in my life and I can live with that.
Except in the freedom way :) But yes probably the best client iPhone users have.
Free as free beer not as freedom
I was still on the old repo https://github.com/diegoberaldin/RaccoonForLemmy
The F-Droid link also changed thanks for letting me know !
From my experience Photon is the best web client, Eternity is the best Android client and Voyager or Mlem seems to be the best iOS clients. In the free and open source side.
I don’t wanna use proprietary client for the fediverse if great FOSS alternative exists.
But here are some proprietary client that looks great in my opinion Connect for Android and Arctic for iOS.
Is it still alive ? Like maintained, I thought it has been pulled out of the PlayStore and F-Droid
Maybe but this isn’t free and open source software…
If you’re on Linux AMD is clearly superior because NVidia has Linux performance issue compared to Windows so you’re ending up paying more for less. However NVidia has the monopole for a reason their product are superior but at what price ? Also if you want to avoid proprietary drivers AMD gets the win too.
I do think AMD is the better option for anyone that spend less than 800-1’000$ on a GPU even for Windows gamers. Personnaly I have made the switch from NVidia to AMD 2 years after ditching Windows for Linux, Never looked back even though Cyberpunk2077 looks amazing on NVidia RTX and some other things.
I have upgraded last year to a RX 7800 XT and have no regrets on spending that money.
Look at what nostr community is doing with zaps, I think it’s cool
